A historic medieval city filled with UNESCO World Heritage sites, Ferrara is an attraction in and of itself for those that love the past. Even more exciting is the annual Palio di Ferrara, the world's oldest horse competition pitting eight districts against one another. A grand parade of drums and characters in medieval attire march through the streets, culminating in the main track for the games.

Description

Situated along the Po Delta in Northern Italy, Ferrara is one of the only Italian cities that does not exhibit a Roman layout, opting to spread its buildings along the river instead of building around a city center. Ferrara thrived during the Italian Renaissance, attracting some of the greatest minds of the 15th and 16th century, such as Jacopo Bellini and Andrea Mantegna. The Este court attracted ... read more
artists, poets and musicians, leading to today's recognition of Ferrara as a cultural mecca and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other historical sites include the town's stone walls - one of the best preserved Renaissance walls in Italy - as well as the beautiful Romanesque cathedral.
