As someone who wasn't used to living in such a busy metropolis as L.A., finding the Temescal Canyon Trail was like finding a $100 bill in my Cheerios! This beautiful trek remains my favorite day hike ... read more
in the immediate Los Angeles area. Rising into the wild Santa Monica Mountains at Temescal Gateway and into Topanga State Park, there's a feeling of the grit and grime of L.A. falling behind you as climb into a natural landscape that sits like an island above the mega-city. Once up there, chaparral vegetation dominates the rolling panorama of hill tops, alive with deer, mountain lion, coyote, hummingbirds and - according to rumor - even mountain sheep! The trail head can be accessed just a five minute drive from downtown Santa Monica and there are a number of loops and ridge trails available for varying lengths of hikes and abilities. On clear days, breathtaking views can be had of Catalina, the Pacific Ocean and - somewhat in juxtaposition - the downtowns of L.A. and Long Beach. This is a great spot to get away from it all, without actually really going anywhere!

This is a fantastic trail that rises up into the Santa Monica mountains above LA. It's great anytime of year, although the summer can be extra warm and mid-winter chills are possible. The vistas are best in mid-winter, when you'll be able to see all the way out to Catalina Island, Long Beach and of course all of the LA downtown. This is an amazing vantage point and great anytime of the year!

Depending on where you're coming from, I'd say ANY season is a good season to visit LA weather-wise. It's a southern California moderate climate, which means mild winters and hot summers. As for the peak seasons in regard to tourism, avoid July and August. Fall or spring would be perfect times to come visit - you'll have warm weather (most likely), and fewer crowds. Have fun!

Good surf, great views! The waves on Venice Beach break best here, but it can be a little culturally rough and localized during good swells. Otherwise, this is a fun place to walk, jog or ride your ... read more
bike out onto as the coastal and city views are amazing. In the winter, you can see beyond downtown L.A. and onto snow-capped mountains in the distance. Quite surreal to see snow from the warm and sunny beach!

So, tough, question. There actually isn't a "BAD" time to visit LA. However, the seasons are distinct, so it depends on your overall outlook and what your look for. I love the LA winter because the skies are crystal clear. You can stand here on the Venice Pier and see snow-capped mountains to the east of the city! However, for swimming in the ocean, only summer months are really nice for that. The water warms up and you no longer need a wetsuit - you can just chill all day on the beach and hop in and out of the ocean in your skivvies if that's what's you like. However, the summer is more smoggy, so you win some and lose some. Anyway, LA is great year round...

The best time for everything: tours, beaches: Sept-Nov, Apr-Jul (not so hot, sunny). Snow on the local mountains Dec-Mar.

The weather is almost always nice in West Los Angeles. If you want to go to the beach, come in the summer. Otherwise, come any other time! The temperature is usually very moderate.
