Only remnants remain of the ancient walls that defended this once-Etruscan city. Caesar’s predecessor, the notorious Sulla, would come in to turn it into a colony for Roman veterans, a move that explains the number of Roman baths still standing. During the Middle Ages, it was a relatively powerful independent town that eventually fell into the control of nearby Florence. Grand villas were erected by the Florentines to capture the panoramic views from Fiesole’s elevated height, an attraction still awaiting travelers today.

Wonderful little town in the outskirts of Florence. Etruscan settlement is breathtaking and it's a convenient place to stay away from the crowds. Spend an afternoon at least. Accessible by local bus from Florence for a few euros.

The road from Florence to Fiesole may not be as attractive now as it was in A Room with a View, or when I was living there in 1969 and traveling back and forth each day on my Vespa. But the road and the village are still spectacular, with many layers of history: Etruscan hill town, Roman ruins, medieval Franciscan monastery, and contemporary dolce vita under the lime trees on the piazza.

Lovely small town on the hills above Florence. Has a very nice camping site and surely some nice other possibilities to stay overnight as well. Not crowded at all and still worth going, even if it's just to have a lunch in one of the small restaurants in the town.
