If you go to Istanbul...YOU MUST try a fish kebab, in turkish "Balik Ekmek". These simple sandwiches are extremely popular and you´ll see little, grill stations set up almost everywhere. On the weekends, you can head to the Galata Bridge and underneath (take the stairs under the bridge) you will find hundreds of people packed along the waterfront restaurants, all happily scarfing down a fresh fish sandwich. You can also sample these sandwiches on the Modern side of Galata Bridge (opposite the Blue Mosque and Old town) just turn left when you cross the bridge to find the local seafood market .

One of the sounds I most associate with my time in Istanbul is the cry from the fish vendors, "Balik, uc lira!" Yes, for three lira (now four) you could get a grilled fish sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onion and vinegar on it. I was never clear what kind of fish they used but getting a fish sandwich on the Eminonu side of Galata Bridge is classice Istanbul.
