This town is a great base camp for outdoor adventure. You can ski in the winter, hike in the summer, visit the Grand Canyon anytime. It's got bars, restaurants, and all kinds of lodging. I visited in April which offered hiking on comfortable cool days and a noticeable lack of crowds.

This was a really cool college town. Great bars and places to eat. It had a really good vibe to it and I definitely recommend staying here a couple nights to take it in.

Flagstaff could be a lot cooler than it is, for a college town. There are actually way fewer coffee shops and cool stores than I would expect with a campus this size. It actually seems to lean more being a "gateway to the Grand Canyon" than offering much in the way of what its true treasures are. If you stay here long enough you see the ski season come around but because AZ ski bowl is not exactly world class, the enthusiasm is only half mast. Some of the board shops around town seem excited and there was the Dew Downtown Flagstaff event - they try. Coconino forest, Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Lava Tube, These are the true gems of the area that flagstaff could really focus on rather than sending people to Grand Canyon and on their way. Downtown is cute so it has that going but the other main streets are fast food and hotels. I would not live here longer than we already have but I would visit the area again for all the cool things to do.

I heard the polar express in the winter is something great to do with the kids. Lowell observatory is a nice place to visit. The star gazing is amazing there!

Great place to stay before going to the Grand Canyon. If you have any train enthusiasts check out the Sizzler on Route 66. They can watch trains go by while they eat.

Flagstaff is the ideal base for visiting the Grand Canyon, Phoenix, and Page. The city is also crossed by the famous Route 66.

An enjoyable area to spend a few days in. Beautiful scenic mountains and ski area (The Snow Bowl) any time of the year. Historic downtown area makes for fun shopping. Best liked restaurant: Busters located near the south entrance of town next to Target store center.

Description

Flagstaff, in the shadow of the San Francisco Peaks mountain range, is also a stone's throw from the spectacular Grand Canyon in northern Arizona. However, this relatively small city is a lively little burg with a Wild West feel, well worth a visit on its own merits: attractions like its historic downtown area, stretched over the famed Route 66, the Lowell Observatory, where you can comprehend the ... read more
mysteries of the heavens, and the historic Santa Fe Railroad, which cuts straight through downtown (and is still in use). You'll also find plenty of restaurants to tickle your taste buds, and when the day is over, Flagstaff's proximity to the Grand Canyon ensures that hotels are in no short supply. If you're looking for a retro-motel feeling head east along Route 66, while the shinier offerings are south of downtown on Milton Road.
