Sometimes repurposed buildings and warehouses make the most interesting venues. Take the Fore St. Restaurant as an example, the combination of a thoughtful makeover, interesting open kitchen layout, and excellent cuisine make for a great dining experience.
My favorite was the oven fired mussels appetizer, and the grilled fish. Not at all touristy of a feel like I've been told Dimillos could be

This place won the James Beard Society, "Best Restaurant in New England" Award a few years ago but that does not really describe what Sam Hayward and his team do here. His seafood mongers are the heart of the Maine Coast and he features seafood and steaks beyond compare. It's in an old red-brick Pontiac dealership, smartly configures with a nice bar in the oil bay and an open kitchen in the main room with boths and tables that look out the old garage windows to Commercial Street and the Oyster Docks. Some roast is turning on a spit, flames are leaping around saute pans, lots of starched, white cotton and smiling faces are bringing you big drinks, fine wines and the place is a happy buzz. Look for the (local) striped bass in the early summer and the "Maine Shrimp" in February and March. Both unique and exceptional if you like seafood.

We go every time we're in Portland and are never disappointed. OK, maybe we shouldn't have brought the 2 year old, but he still enjoyed the food (it helps that you can see everything in the open kitchen). Service is always excellent, and waiting at the bar is a pleasure.
