From the moment I walked in, with the heady aroma of lilies to welcome me, I knew this hotel and I would get along. You would never guess at its former prison identity, if it weren’t for the staff pointing out old initials carved in the marble columns. Currently, the exquisite décor, elegant furnishings, Turkish art, and excellent service have transformed this into an absolute oasis, right in the heart of the Old City. The fitness room is large, with a spread of refreshments to reenergize after a workout, and his and hers saunas to melt in. I loved the Blue Room, a quiet, serene room for relaxing or enjoying a game or book. The restaurant is enclosed with large windows, letting in plenty of light to enjoy your meal by, and the lounge is a perfect place to enjoy a drink to the melody of the piano. There just isn’t any competition for this hotel in the Sultanahmet area!

This prison turned hotel is completely gorgeous from every angle! Perfect location for visiting the sights with Hagai Sophia, Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace only steps away.

This former prison has been converted into one of the most luxurious hotels I have ever seen.
It is within a 5 minute walk of all of the most important historical monuments that Istanbul has to offer.
It was sold out when I visited but it felt like I had the whole place to myself.
There are many bars that are almost hidden that overlook both The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.
The main restaurant in the garden has glass walls and is so perfect surrounded by flowers.
There is even the original mosque refurbished to FS standards.
The service is impeccable, exactly what you expect from a Four Seasons.

Unlike the hotels that embrace their notorious past, the Four Seasons doesn't really highlight its prior incarnation as a Turkish prison. But the hotel preserved some of the architectural features including the courtyard watchtowers and the prison's original wooden doors.

For each of my trips, I always eat at one of the city's leading restaurants. For Istanbul, it was the Four Seasons in Sultanahmet. Expensive, yes! But the meal was one I'll never forget. You might google the Four Seasons; I suspect the menu will be listed on their website. The hotel has an interesting background. Once a prison and converted to a hotel about 10 years ago, it was the backdrop for the movie "Midnight Express."

This is an Ottoman era jail house converted to a hotel by Four Seasons... Even if you don't stay here... visit around 5.00 pm for an afternoon tea ... or later for a drink on the roof terrace (in the summer time)
    lovely hotel with a character...

The Four Seasons in Sultanahmet is absolutely incredible! It is in one of the nicer and quieter areas of Sultanahmet. During my visit I learned that the hotel is housed in a late 19th century Ottoman prison. The lobby and rooms are wonderful! Anatolian carpets line the halls and rooms. All the rooms have large comfy beds and a sitting area. I felt more like I was at home than in a hotel. One of my favorite features was the steam bath! It's like having a personal hamam in your room! While the standard rooms are wonderful, the deluxe room, which used to be the prison warden's office, is spectacular! This two floor room is more like a small apartment than hotel room! Another great aspect is the courtyard which is filled with greenery and a gazebo where you can enjoy a lovely lunch, or evening drink. There are three terraces, one with a view of the Marmara Sea, one of the cobble stone streets of the neighborhood, and one of the Haghia Sophia. All in all, if you want a luxurious stay in Istanbul's old city, this is the place to stay!

Fantastic. Rooms are on the small side but the location and views from this property are spectacular. If you are in Istanbul to see the historical sights, this is the best part of town to be in and the Four Seasons is THE place to stay.

Decor is lovely, service is top notch, and the food and beverage at the property are excellent. The hotel itself is a converted prison -- what a great place it would be to serve a life sentence.
