I was on a press trip when I hiked Fox Glacier in October 2009. What's remarkable about the South Island is that you can drive up from Greymouth to hike a glacier and then drive down to Queenstown and go white water rafting. I had expected the glacier to be all white like the arctic rather than dirty from sediment. We could occasionally see some orange, reddish dirt which our guide said had blown over from the fires in Australia that year.

This glacier is within relatively easy reach of the town of the same name. Even in the summer, the ice found there is spectacular. One does have to go up a trail a ways before actually getting to the ice. Definitely worth a visit if exploring the south island.
