When I come to Oregon, I always enjoy an occasional stop at Fred Meyer. This chain actually dipped it's toe into California (Chico) many years ago, but maybe the idea of paying sales tax sent them packing back to the Beaver State.
Last Sunday, I was taking a zigzag path from the Pearl District to Nob Hill, and the sight of this Freddy's opened up right in front of me. And since I remembered that my son needed an alarm clock for his room, why not find a cheap one here? So I did and on sale!
The store itself seems to be on an economic cusp, so like Berkeley the range of clientele is very diverse and sometimes entertaining (especially street folks and narcissistic progressives). The store itself seems to emphasize groceries more than the "housewares" that you see at other Fred Meyer locations. Hence, you need to go elsewhere for you last minute camping items. Otherwise the store is roomy, clean, and a pleasure to wander around. I could easily imagine this Fred Meyer as my neighbourhood grocery store.
