Although it's away from some of the more popular sites, this tower is the symbol of the city to many. Even if you can't make it over to the tower itself, at least be sure to check it out from the water, where it is visible up on it's hill.

A must stop place in Istanbul if you are willing to get over the bridge to the Golden horn. You can see all of Istanbul from the tower, from the Sea of Marmara to the Bosphorus bridge and a little beyond on a good day. The 'balcony' where you stand, I wouldn't really call a balcony. It's more of a medieval gutter. So it's a little scary at first but well worth overcoming your fear of heights. The tower also has a cafe and restaurant with traditional Ottoman performances (around 80 lira for a table).
The original tower was part of the Theodosian walls and defense system but it was destroyed in the fourth crusade during the sacking of Constantinople by Latin Crusaders. The tower you see today was built in 1348 by the Genoese Colony (Pera District) and they called it Christea Turris (Tower of Christ). Since then it has been repaired and renamed several times.

I enjoyed my trip to the top - the view is great, and I went at the end of the day to watch the sun set. The small walkway around the top is super crowded, with barely enough room to go around single file, but I just took my time, playing with my zoom lens to look at the city around us. It's nice enough, but not spectacular, and there are places to enjoy great views while calmly sipping a nice drink rather than being crushed by the crowd.Recommended for:Local Culture

Going to the top of the tower might take some time due to lines of people waiting to do the same. However the wait is worth it. The view of the city from the top of the tower is just breathtaking.

Galata Bridge was built by the Genoese during the Middle Ages as a watch tower over the area. The surrounding colony of Galata was independent of Constantinople until it was eventually captured by the Turks. Today it's one of Beyoglu's principle monuments, visible from the Bosphorus and the Asian shores. It also has one of the best views of the city. The only problem is that the wait can be really long and they charge 10 lira to climb the tower.

Totally underrated! I read about it but it was never on my must-see list and I think it is absolutely the best first stop to make in Istanbul! It gives you tremendous perspective of the city surrounds and the building itself conveys the strong history of the city.

For the last night of your stay in Istanbul I recommend having a dinner in the most romantic restaurant in Istanbul, it is on the top of Galata tower - reservation needed. It is not cheep, but food is wonderful, music and entertainment program too. The view from the 360degree terrace is amazing, especially at nights, when all mosques are lighted in orange lights. Magician and spectacular view! You can visit the terrace without to be a guest of the restaurant.
Have a wonderful trip in this magician town!!

Whenever you come to Istanbul, don't miss the panorama balcony of Galata Tower. To seeing great viewed of Istanbul, the Bosphorus and also you can see the Asia continent while you're still standing in Europe. It's cool!

Nice, but nothing special. It's one of Istanbul's landmarks from where you can enjoy a nice view on the Bosphorus. It could be worth it if you don't have the queue, otherwise you'd better skip it.
