The Texas coast has its share of popular beach towns, but the island of Galveston has enough history and family-friendly attractions to please every type of traveler. The historic Strand district attracts visitors with several interesting boutiques and local eateries housed within dramatic Victorian structures dating back to Galveston's heyday in the 1890s. Lively beaches, bordered by a paved Seawall (perfect for joggers, cyclists and photographers), are popular with families, young travelers and fishermen. And a newly opened Pleasure Pier (a $60 million addition to the shoreline) now operates various carnival games and 16 exciting rides, including a 100-foot-tall Ferris Wheel.

Great Texan city on the Gulf of Mexico. Walk along the sea wall, check out the kitschy shops in the downtown area, or visit Galveston State Park and walk in the amazing super warm water!

Galveston is one of my favorite places to visit. Really laid back community with tons of fun stuff to do. Everything is gorgeous. I highly recommend renting a bicycle and riding along the Seawall. One of the best times of my life.

Galveston, Texas is a coastal town about fifty miles or so south of Houston. It was considered the Wall Street of the South before the 1900 storm that virtually destroyed the city, sweeping nearly eight thousand people out to sea in the process. When I visited the city it was digging out from the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.

I drove through The Strand with my friend Tara who lives in Houston. I was in Texas for a month. I loved it. We drove along the Gulf. We went to the rain forest cafe. It was awesome. They had a beautiful aquarium. Here is a video that I took.( Copy and paste link in your browser address box)
I saw how everyone was rebuilding from the most recent hurricane from a couple years ago. Many of the buildings on the beach side on pylons were destroyed but are coming back. We also drove by moody gardens. We were supposed to go to the aquarium but didn't make it this trip. I'll have to go next time..

I loved Galveston Island. It is so beautiful that it takes your breath away. I remember the seafood restaurants there. The blue crabs were delicious. A friend of mine let me have his Corvette for 3 months and I didn't know that that car had two systems to it and my son hit one switch as I was driving and the car just stopped. Come to find out he had switched it to the metric system that registered that the car had no gas. We had to wait for a flat bed tow to come just to find that out, lol. I remember my son getting stung by a jellyfish and the lifeguard put meat tenderizer on it. Boy these were the good old days. I wish I was there right now.
