The gaslamp quarter offers a lot of nightlife. You can find many bars, lounges and restaurants here. I can recommend Fred's Mexican Cafe, where you can get delicious mexican food. Also, if you like hookahs, there's a hookah bar nearby ;)Recommended for:

We went there couple times, both at night. Although we were with two grade school age children, we felt pretty safe walking around the streets in the area.
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, but many of them seem to fill up pretty quickly during weekends -- reservations recommended. Oh, and do leave some space in your stomach, as there are several sweet shops (chocolate, ice cream, etc.).
In general, if you're looking for a good Mexican restaurant or more touristy souvenir shops, I'd go to Old Town, but Gaslamp Quarter seems to have more variety and upscale restaurants.
Note: There is a web site hosted by the local association that lists all restaurants along with area maps, which was handy.Recommended for:

Well, it may be the most touristic part of San Diego, but there are definitely some nice things to explore in the neighborhood. Definitely come here for fun bars or good restaurants... you just have to be okay with navigating crowds in the spring/summer months.Recommended for:

Gaslamp Quarter is the heart of San Diego, easily the most popular district in the San Diego. About 16 blocks. include the PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres i
+ Some of the best clubs and lounge are located here
+ Many restaurant and shopping store
+ The Nicest hotel of San Diego are in this district
+ Walking distance to the pier.
+ Many events going it on.
- Street parking is very hard to find.
- No public free parking
- All hotels are pricey, the most expensive in San Diego
* Many hotels here charge a lot for their parking rate some as much as $30 a day !
My Two Cents,
Gaslamp is doubt when most people go to San Diego would had spent some time there, if you are sport nuts, you would definite head there no doubt or those who like to shopped in upscale store and also enjoy a great view. But if you have the family or budget traveler you could skip this and spend more time in elsewhere of the city.Recommended for:

This is where the nightlife action is! A huge variety of restaurants, many upscale, where you can sit outside on a patio for your meal, with a European atmosphere. A great place to just walk around and enjoy being in the heart of downtown, not far from the harbor. Horton Plaza is also nearby with many shops and eateries as well.
