Some people might not find this very interesting or exciting, but I don't think many people has encountered a steam clock before.

A thing you can't miss in Gastown, Vancouver. Pretty easy to find, because there is always a little crown around it. Makes it hard to take a pic without other people on it. The Clock announces the quarter hours with a whistle chime that plays the Westminster Quarters. A great fun for all tourists. Well worth a selfie in front of it!

Pretty unique item. I can't think of anywhere else on my travels where I have come across a steam clock

It's a clock. It's a Steam Clock. Seems too over rated I think. It is okay to observe if you are in the Gastown area otherwise you can skip it. Don't go out of your way to see this else you'll probably be disappointed.

The clock is running on a steam engine. I believe it has a high pitch "dong" on every hour. And you could see the steam seeping out of the clock, which is very interesting.
I don't think you see a steam engine clock anywhere these days.

This Gastown sight is perpetually ringed with Tourists waiting to photograph the vaporous whistles that toot every 15 minutes. Yet, things are not always as they seem, as this "antique" clock was installed in 1977 when the neighbourhood's heritage preservation movement was kicking off. It's loosely based on London's Big Ben Tower and is largely powered by electricity rather than steam. The steam that powers the whistles comes from an underground heating system that also warms local buildings.

Yet it's all a good show if you happen to be in the area. I've been here on several occasions, and mostly be chance. I love to explore the Downtown Core of Vancouver, which means long walks and by sometimes familiar routes. However, just like Fisherman's Wharf in SF, I don't enjoy overly touristy areas, and in this part of Gastown, I quickly move on.

if you like old steam train, or nicely engineered object, you will love this clock. Kind of interesting to see how it works. I don't find the place where the clock stands to be the best place as it's almost in the middle of a street.

Just few minutes from Waterfront Station. It´s a steam clock, nothing special. In Gastown, you can find a lot of souvenirs shop, sightseeing bus and restaurants.

I thought this was going to be really cool, but sadly it wasn't. It's not very big and kinda lame. I walked down there and saw it, took a picture, and kept walking. You should do the same.

Historical steam clock in a square when people many years ago couldn't be late.

Super touristy, but fun. It is just a clock in Gastown, but it is fun to pose next too.

Description

The Gastown Steam Clock is a clock powered entirely by the steam trapped underneath the Gastown District, a result of underground lines used to heat nearby buildings. A major tourist attraction, its Gothic style brings thoughts back to earlier times. This is just a romantic notion, as the clock was built in 1977 by inventor Ray Saunders. It’s still a remarkable device, chiming every hour and ... read more
gushing out steam every 15 minutes.
