When I think of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, I think of a mountain village where everything is within walking distance. The Sky Lift, the Space Needle, Ripley's Believe it or Not, the Aquarium, et al are all conveniently located, offering lot's of fun things to do in a very small diameter. And for lunch or dinner, try Bubba Gumps. I had two terrific meals there.

Gatlinburg is a town for which the phrase 'tourist trap' was invented. Once a quaint mountain village, it's been transformed over the years into a neon and commercial wonderland, full of hokey souvenirs, one-off amusements, kitsch shopping opportunities, and lots and lots of unhealthy food. But, hey, why not? Gatlinburg is unique in its hokiness, and good for a laugh. Check out the skyway chairlift and ask a local for information about lazy river tubing a short distance away at the 'Y'.Recommended for:Family Travelers

It's ideal for a weekend trip. The Smokies are a great place to hike with flowing rivers and streams, but the area surrounding the mountains particularly the restaurants and shops are a little bit too much on the kitschy side.Recommended for:Outdoor Enthusiasts

There are some great hidden gems in Gatlinburg, especially if you want to enjoy parts of the town that are less well-known....and less crowded. For the outdoor types, there's the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and the Greenbrier portion of the park system. For shoppers, the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts tour is a nice alternative to the standard tourist gear; artisans on the 8-mile loop craft everything from brooms and pottery to leather and paintings. In downtown Gatlinburg, the most unique shops are in The Village. Gatlinburg website gives helpful info, especially on events. http://gatlinburg.com

Las Vegas in the Appalachians! Came here for the sky lift knowing nothing about the placed and the blaze of neon was a shock coming out of the National Park...nevertheless, if you embrace it you can have a lot of campy fun. Definitely visit the 'moonshine'/whiskey distilleries for free samples! You can hear from top-notch live bluegrass around town as well.

Imagine if the Bible Belt, Las Vegas and Coney Island had a love child. The result would be oh-so-gloriously-tacky Gatlinburg. Get your taffy and fudge fix, ride the gondola to peer over the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains,or visit a wax museum. As campy as it was, I couldn't help but have fun.

Being born and raised much of my life in this small town, I have to give it a 5 out of 5 stars. It'll always be home to me even though many tourists are turned off by the putt-putt and airbrush t-shirt shops. But there is much, much more to this little gem with 500,000 acres of National Park land to explore. Given that it's within a day's drive of every state East of the Mississippi, it's a great place to meet for family reunions with plenty of things to do. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
