After Bruge, this is another favourite city of mine in Belgium. Similar architecture with Bruge, Gothic and with a charming city centre. We rode a horse carriage, kinda pricey to go around the city and its a great way to get an overview of this medieval place.

Along with Brugge and Antwerp, Ghent is one of the great Flemish trading centers in northern Belgium. Take a look at the intricate work on the old guild houses in the main plaza, and explore the old town center.

An adorable town right between Brussels and Bruges. If you like the small town feel while still being a big city then Ghent is for you. There are a lot of restaurants that will guide you around the city (as long as you like brats and waffles). But, if you like small towns that are absolutely gorgeous then jump on the train and find your way to Bruges...because it's just magical.

Although Ghent is one of Belgium's major cities and a university center, it seems less touristy than other major cities in Belgium. Ghent is an efficient train ride from Brussels. Therefore, it is a good day trip. We arrived here in the morning, walked around the city to see various neighborhoods, had lunch, visited the cathedral, then took the train back to Brussels in time for dinner.

I lived in Gent for almost a year and absolutely loved this city. It has amazing architecture, great places to study, fabulous food and a really nice atmosphere - especially in the spring. The weather leaves a bit to be desired and the lack of sunshine can be a bit depressing (it rains a lot there) but you can't have it all. I think Gent is one of Belgium's better kept secrets as most tourists tend to head for Bruges or Antwerp.
