Your enjoyment of Gili Trawangan, the largest of the three Gili Islands, largely hinges on your appetite for partying. Sure, the diving and snorkeling are good, and once you get out of the town it quickly becomes very quiet and calm, but the majority of comers are here to party -- lured by the freeflowing drugs ("weed, mushrooms, coke, ecstasy") and the meatmarkety vibe. If you're not in the mood, you're better off to stay on Gili Air or Gili Meno.Recommended for:

the main island from the 3 Gilis. Great for snorkling and diving. No motorised vehicles are allowed in the island, so horses are used instead. Young and vivid athmosphere, with a lot of bars and rest.Recommended for:

Without a motorized transpor to haul you around, there are plenty of donkey-drawn carts. Your feet will also do just as well. Mushroom shakes are abound on this island. A perfect pairing with the sunset. Freshly caught fish to grill nightly is another highlight here. Not a bad place to maroon yourself for two to three days.

Wanted to leave within moments of landing here. This is a great place to go if you are a stoned backpacker. The beach here is absolutely lovely. Unfortunately, it is overrun with tourists who are more interested in partying than respecting the natural beauty of this island. I'm sure that this was once a gorgeous place. Unfortunately, the visitors have turned it into a trash can with beautiful water, great views of Lombok, and the smell of weed and beer farts.

If you like remote and funky this place is for you. I have such fond memories of my travels around Indo..which I did solo and met a lot of fun people along the way. This island is like a mini paradise for ravey types. The diving was awesome. I have memories for taking morning runs around the entire circumference of the island..which couldn't be more than 2 miles. Lovely.

It's one of my favorite place to enjoy the white sand, sun, and beach. A cool spot to relax and meet people from other countries. Great food, clean beach, beautiful view, nice cottages, bars and cheap beer as well.

I like this laid back island where you can move around only on foot, horse cart or bikes. The place is an idea for day trip from Senggigi beach or you can also have an overnight stay. The island has excellent white sand beach and turquoise water sea, ideal to laze around by the beach. The scuba diving however is average as there are not many good coral and variety of fish is relatively minimal.

This island is very special, there is no automotive at all, everybody used legendary antique horse carriage to move around the island or carry daily activity load. As usual every body used bicycle to wonder the island or just simply walk.

Perhaps its' the fact that I went in the off season in early December, but I found the island to be a good mix of partying and seclusion. True, it's riddled with tourists but it only takes a short bike ride to the other side of the island (the entire island is 9km around!) to be rid of them. I had a blast and met some amazing people...a nice change of pace from Bali that's for sure. But if you're looking to mingle with locals and get completely away from tourists, this place might not be from you.

I love how calm and serene the place was. It is quite a bit more expensive than rest of indonesia/bali area. All that is fine, because the place is GORGEOUS.
The only drawback is that it is riddled with tourists rather than locals.
If your main goal is to get away and like to meet other travelers, the Gili T is for you. If you main goal is to learn about culture be around locals, then Gili T is NOT for you.
I would have to say I was relaxed there. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the whole island.

Don't fly all the way to Indonesia without taking a day trip to the island of Gili T. You have to take a boat or plane to Lombok island, and then a powerboat to Gili. You will officially be off the grid. Amazing place. I got my scuba cert there and I spoiled myself - haven't had a dive as good anywhere else since.
