Glenorchy is about 50km down the road from Queenstown and is half a world away. Where QT is busy and bustling GY is a quiet refuge from the speed of life. Stunning surroundings and breathtaking mountain views.

Glenorchy is a wonderful small town in New Zealand. Sitting here in the evenings watching the sun disappear over the tips of the mountains is just beautiful. The staff at the small cafe is very friendly and inviting and the food is quite tasty also. I would recommend a trip out if only just for an afternoon. You will not regret it.

For someone to say there is not much to here. They can not be out door people.
This is a quick list off the top of my head.
-The Dart Jet and Funyaks up the Dart river.
-Walking tracks - The Rees, the Dart , the Routeburn, The Caples ,the board walk around the wetlands, lake Sylan walk.
- Fishing - fly fishing and spin fishing , any where there are creeks and rivers all over the place.
-Jet boating and wind surfing, the world wind surfing record for speed was held here for a while.
Horse back riding. - two main stables.
Deer stalking, in the national park and on private property if you have permission.
- Sky diving - NZone
You come up here to get away from cell phones computers and get in touch with nature, charge the batteries and rekindle the sole.
Glenorchy is heaven to some.

Glenorchy is a beautiful place, but in typical New Zealand style there is not much to do there. There is one nice hike along the river into marsh lands, but basically that's about it.
Definitely worth it, but don't expect to be able to explore the full beauty of the place.
I believe Sauron's tower from LOTR was filmed in Glenorchy, but don't bother trying to figure out where exactly. They compined the mountains from one locations with the landscape from a different location to create all the scenes.

hello lord of the rings- i've died and come back in froddo's army. Skip Queenstown unless you want the action sports thrill and head due south to the tiny hamlet of Glenorchy. the beauty will blow your mind and confuse your mind as to weather or not you are really living in a dream.
