Hotel Golden Tower has a great location, tucked away on a little side street but really right in the middle of everything. Surrounding this quiet, quaint romantic fantasy of Florence, is all the shopping and sight seeing and action of one of Italy's greatest cities. Inside the hotel, I was greeted with an instant immersion in that thing that Italians do so incredibly well: the bridging of historic architecture and tradition with cutting edge contemporary design and modern artistic aesthetic. A real boutique hotel, Golden Tower really makes you feel special. The in-house spa was a real draw for me, although I never did get to partake in the "emotional showers" (what could that be?)-- the artful soaking tubs were more than I could have hoped for, complete with dim soothing lighting and stone arched ceilings. Sometimes I felt like Alice in the palace of the Queen of Hearts -- for example, in the bar and breakfast room with those formal and voluptuous red and gold chairs! The front desk staff (who seemed to be 100% gay) were helpful and charming.

It is such a cliche, but one of my favorite things about Italy is how it blends old with new. This hotel typifies that perfectly. The location is outlandishly central in the middle of historic Florence and the building is historic, but all of the furnishings feel comfortable, clean and new. It's small, but the tiny spa is very welcome after a day out in chaotic Rome.

If you're staying during the third Sunday of the month, be sure to check out the nearby organic market in the Piazza Santo Spirito.

Everything about this hotel is slick. The sitting room has a feeling of grandeur – chandeliers, plush red seating, dark red wood paneling, artifacts on display… In fact, an interesting paradox about the lobby is that it kind of feels like being in a museum, but it’s so soft and snuggly at the same time. There are lots special features, like valet parking and free wi-fi, but the spa facilities are what really sets this place apart. There’s a stylish pool with jacuzzi, a Turkish-style bath, and massages by appointment – all of which makes this feel like a special occasion resort. It’s also notable that it’s handicapped accessible. And history buffs might be interested to know that the Strozzi family built this structure in the 15th century to demonstrate superiority over the notorious Medici family. Considering I’ve never heard of the Strozzis, I can’t say the building worked for them – but I’m pretty confident it will work for you.
