This part of Amsterdam--the canal belt of Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht--is the stateliest part of the city and the most scenic for a stroll. You can entertain yourself with numerous shops, cafes and museums along the way, or if you stroll in the evening, just by peering into the curtain-less windows of the grand homes that line the canals. This is typical Amsterdam at its heart: grounded, wealthy, practical, not ostentatious, occasionally quirky.

The "Canal Girdle" is a ring of three canals that nearly encircle Amsterdam Centruum. A bike ride down these canals is a "must-see" in Amsterdam. The canal house facades are comprised of beautiful gables and other typical Dutch architecture.
