The Grand Canal Hotel aims for a simple standard and hits the mark. The hotel itself has little to distinguish it from any other—the lounge, dining room and bedrooms are pleasant, modest, and clean. There is, however, a very good pub that does a lunchtime carvery and light meals. They advertise a lot of deals in the lobby for tickets for various shows nearby (a local venue was formerly called the Grand Canal Theatre), so you might find some savings that way. The hotel is probably further from the centre than you’d want to walk frequently, but there are buses that run just outside the door. The only real downside I can find to the hotel is that there isn’t a proper full-service restaurant—the pub does dinner, but you can only have shepherd’s pie and Irish stew so many times.Recommended for:

The Grand Canal Hotel is the only hotel in Dublin I’ve encountered with a take-away coffee counter in the lobby (I’m not sure that I fully approve, but I can appreciate its practical benefits for those without time for the sit-down breakfast). In all other respects the hotel is fairly standard; it’s new, clean, and the rooms are reasonably well-appointed. It seems that they do a lot of trade in package deals with the Bord Gais Energy Theatre. I was happy to see that the hotel bar is actually a functional pub that pulls in a fair few customers who aren’t guests. I clocked it a ten-minute walk to the Trinity College / Grafton Street area, which puts it in the nice position of being close to everything without incurring the immediate city-center rates.Recommended for:
