Few corners of old Europe have survived globalization with their character intact. The Pera section of Istanbul, however, is old Europe at its grandest. The Hotel Londres was built during the 1890's after the Orient Express began ferrying Europe's wealthiest travelers to Istanbul. In 1922 Hemingway stayed in the Londres while covering the Turkish War of Independence. From the classic marble facade to the red plush interior lobby and the elegant bar, the Londres is pure old world luxury.

If you’re looking for old Turkish lodgings, with eclectic style and plenty of history, this is it. I’d say this hotel is more about character and charm than modern luxury. I could have explored the curiosities and quirks decorating this hotel to no end…giving a real feel for the roots going back to 1892. From the parrot in the lounge, to the motorcycles in the hall, I was continually surprised by the collection. I appreciated the numerous taxis driving by, since walking to most places wasn’t the most convenient. The room was elegantly furnished - it didn’t feel like a modern elegance, rather more like an ‘I had stepped back in time’ elegance. Definitely check out the rooftop bar/café – it offers views to compete with any other in the city. Thankfully, even though it’s an old hotel, it has an elevator to get you there.

Occupying the same area with Pera Palace, Büyük Londra Oteli (Great London Hotel) is distinguished with its history, exquisite interiors and its rooftop terrace overlooking the Golden Horn. The hotel experienced a surge in its popularity after being named as German-Turkish filmmaker Fatih Akın’s favourite place. The bar menu is not expansive, but the experience is worth dipping in.

Quirky charm doesn't even begin to describe it. Knock back a few gin & tonics in this legendary journalist's haunt under the watchful gaze of the resident parrots.

The Grand Hotel De Londres is just next to the Pera Museum, overlooking the Golden Horn. The building itself is quite beautiful, matching the building facades of Taksim. Upon entering the hotel, you are greeted with a Rococo-esque lobby. The colors are bright, with golds and pinks accenting the ceilings and walls. The front desk is tucked next to the entrance, reminiscing an old coat check. There is a lounge with a bar next to the front desk and entrance. The furniture matches the grandiose Rococo theme of the hotel. A large staircase leads to the upper floors or you can opt for the elevator. While the the lobby and main entrance have a regal essence, I felt the rooms did not quite match the theme. The room I visited seemed a little simple and not as cared for as the lobby. The standard room had a brown carpet, simple white bed, and small bathroom. I noticed the wall paper was peeling at a few corners, and the shower seemed to need a good scrubbing. It is possible that I was shown a subpar room and that others are quite nice. With the grand lobby, I had imagined an equally grand room. Again, perhaps the room I visited did not match the quality of the rest of the hotel.
