When our dragon boat team raced in Taiwan, we stayed at the Yuanshan Great Hotel (圓山大飯店). As one of the world's tallest Chinese classical buildings, this landmark hotel has hosted several foreign dignitaries. Moreover, Taipei's Grand Hotel was featured in "Eat Drink Man Woman," a Taiwanese film directed by Ang Lee.
The Grand Hotel's roof showcases a flair for Chinese architecture and culture. In addition to its vermilion columns, the hotel reflects artistry from different Chinese dynasties on each of its eight guest levels through its murals and decor including its wall panels, paintings, carvings, and restaurants. It's not wonder why the hotel earned the name, "The Dragon Palace," for its dragon motifs that are intertwined throughout various structures of the hotel.
Although this hotel has preserved the historical design and feel in its architecture, interior and keys, there are some novelties and modern amenities in these spacious rooms. For example, the bathrooms have Japanese style bidet toilets with tons of buttons for various features. In addition, the rooms facing south offer guests a panoramic view of the city. Finally, the hotel is a popular venue for conventions/conferences because of its auditorium and meeting rooms. Thus, budget rooms are available for $99 per night or less with reasonable group rates.Recommended for:

In addition to a hotel, The Grand Hotel is known as a beautiful landmark, located in Yuanshan. The Grand Hotel was actually one of the tallest buildings in the late 70s for a few years, but, what's even more spectacular, is that this hotel's palace-style beauty was used to promote Taiwanese culture in order to host and accommodate ambassadors and leaders from around the world.
Even if you aren't staying here, this is a hotel worth checking out if you're in the area to check out the beautiful exterior and interior of the building!
