A quick drive outside the city (even better if you're on a motorcycle!) and you're in Great Falls, a beautiful National park with a network of hiking trails for all levels. Before I start hiking I always head over to the waterfalls and watch the kayaks battling the rapids. They have a neat visitor's center too, as well as a huge post that indicates the flood lines of particularly stormy seasons. Go during the fall, when the leaves are changing and the summer humidity has died down.

Ready to get away from government shutdown mania? While Great Falls National Park is officially closed, you can still hike the nearly five mile Billy Goat Trail. To access it, park by Old Angler's Inn and wander up the tow path. You're guaranteed to butt fewer horns than Congress.

This is a fabulous place to hike. The scenery is beautiful and the falls are impressive. It isn't legal to kayak the falls but some foolhardy folks try it each year - and have to be rescued. On the Maryland side is the old canal, part of which is still in operation.

It is a little known fact that great falls, just outside DC, has some of the best whitewater kayaking of any metro area in the US. A substantial part of the US Olympic team lives and trains in the area. I learned to kayak here - and it is really spectacular. Its also a great place to take a break from city life. The Billy Goat trail is a nice hiking trail. Bring a picnic.
