I didn't stay here but I stopped in with some family at the Whip bar and grill downstairs for some drinks and PEI mussels. The Christmas tree in the main staircase and the pine garland were Dickensian and welcoming.Recommended for:

If cozy accommodation, tasty food and a historic building sound like your cup of tea then this is the place for you. The breakfast room – Main Street Dining Room – is open for guest breakfast between 7.30 and 10.30 a.m. daily. You can choose from a continental-style breakfast or a hearty full Vermont country breakfast – both types are excellent and provide veggie options. The Whip Bar & Grill is the destination for lunch, dinner or brunch on a Sunday. It’s popular with locals and Inn guests alike. I had a delicious pumpkin ravioli with a toasted-nut topping, for a crunchy-smooth texture and a salty-sweet flavor. Following that, a cup of strong local coffee was in order – the innkeeper said it would put hairs on my chest. The guiltily sweet finale, and perhaps the best dish I’ve tasted all year, was the Vermont maple crème brulee. Rich cream hid beneath a thick maple glaze and the whole thing was topped with a delicious cookie. Yum!

The Green Mountain Inn is so warm and welcoming, staying there is like staying with your family. That is, if your family were all amazing chefs and wanted you to be near at least one flat-screen TV, Jacuzzi and hot-tub at all times. During a winter visit, I stayed in one of the newer buildings on the property, known as the Mansfield House. Modern suites with a historic design aesthetic fill the building’s two floors, and it’s nicely set back from the bustle of Stowe’s Main Street. The giant four-poster bed has a nice firm mattress, and I snoozed very comfortably atop six soft pillows and under a handmade quilt, with a toasty gas fire and in-room Jacuzzi tub. This building is the most distant from the Inn’s heated outdoor pool, but tiptoeing through the snow in my dressing gown was worth it. In winter, it’s dark when the pool opens at 4 or 5 p.m. – swimming in the lagoon-like water while steam rose into the night sky was simply fantastic. The main lodge building features slightly smaller rooms but loads of authentic historic charm alongside the flat-screen TVs. There’s wi-fi throughout the old and new buildings, and Ethernet plugins throughout the suites. Speaking of ether, look out for the ghost of Boots Berry, a 19th-century Inn resident and local legend.

Oh wow, the outdoor pool is fantastic in winter. You can make a mad dash across the snow and ice, then hop in the glorious heated pool for a swim under the stars and fairy lights. I’d never before had icicles on my bangs while I was floating in a cozy blue pool. Just don’t think about how cold it will feel when you get out of the water and toddle back to the building.
