Who says you have to spend a pile of money to be cultured in San Francisco? We love this hostel for its own history and culture. The Green Tortoise has been around for decades as a hostel and bus line, and you can still take a bus trip throughout California, the US, and beyond. Plus, the building is historic (check out the pressed tin ceiling) and it's located smack dab in the center of bustling North Beach.

The Green Tortoise Hostel is a great choice for anyone looking for a bit of adventure in their San Francisco stay. The property is surprisingly large given its prime North Beach location. While it may be steps away from some tacky strip clubs, it’s also really close to some of the best bars in the city (15 Romolo, in particular) and Francis Ford Coppola’s Cafe Zoetrope. Chinatown and the heart of North Beach are just a block away.
After ascending a flight of stairs, you’re welcomed by the hostel’s young and friendly staff. To the left, a large room houses a stage, auditorium, a pool table and a kitchen the size of most San Francisco studio apartments.
The rooms consist of a number of bunk beds. Bathrooms are shared and located outside, as is the case with most hostels. The hostel also provides a number of computers for Internet access.
But what makes Green Tortoise particularly unique is its energizing vibe. With plenty of activities, it’s a great spot for active travelers looking for fun San Francisco excursions.

Huge party hostel with a giant ballroom filled with pool tables, a bar and a stage for all kinds of performances. The staff is really friendly and they host events pretty much every night. The location is right in the heart of North Beach so there is plenty of food and nightlife nearby. You should be aware of all the strip clubs nearby though.

The backpacker's backpacker hostel. I sleep easier at night, knowing there are still hippie hostels filled with wide-eyed international folk playing acoustic guitar and talking about changing the world through travel. Loved the private rooms, internal atrium (i.e., quieter rooms at night), free vegetarian dinners on Mon, Wed and Fri, pool table, free wifi, etc. Plus, you are in the exact middle of North Beach. I didn't get to go on any Green Tortoise trips, but they run plenty near and far: Yosemite or the North Coast, or Washington to Mexico. When you're in hte dining hall, look up and admire the turn-of-the-century ceiling.Recommended for:Backpackers

We stayed in the nearby building they have with private rooms, and a shared kitchen. It was cheap, clean and well cared for. Mostly a friendly bunch staying there, and a lot quieter than the main hostel. There was no smoking in the rooms though, so several people hung out outside their rooms smoking late into the night. Kept us awake and the smell of smoke drifted in.

If you're on a budget, this is the best hostel in town. They offer free dinners three nights a week, a full travel booking desk, and free breakfast. Ask about their seperate building that has private rooms, away from the dorms :)
