On the Southeastern Coast of India, about an hour's drive from Tamil Nadu's capital city Chennai (formerly Madras), Mahabalipuram (or Mammalapuram, as many people call it) is a small city that's known for its 7th-8th century beachside temples dedicated to Hindu deities (especially Lord Shiva). Many of the temples and bas relief sculptures here are notable for being cut from single pieces of stone. It's a small enough complex that it can be done in a long day trip from Chennai or, better yet, as an overnight on the way to the former French city of Pondichery.
