Guanajuato is a small city in the central Mexican state of the same name. Built over a narrow valley and the surrounding hills, the city is extremely uneven and almost all of the streets are slanted. In addition, many of those streets are too narrow for automobiles, so most of the driving roads are located either partially or totally underground. Such a layout arose from Guanajuanto’s birth as a silver mining camp with no central planning. When the mines made the camp rich, settlers erected permanent buildings without consideration for cars, as they did not yet exist! The most important mine in the area is Mina Valenciana, a still active mine that once produced two-thirds of the world’s silver under the Spanish flag. Most tourists come to relax and see the city itself, as the architecture is very unique. However there are many museums, monuments, gardens and restaurants to keep all visitors busy and smiling.

Great colonial city in Mexico! Lots to see! This photo was taken on the highest terrain called El Pipila! Nice panoramic view of the downtown.

'Once Upon a Time in Mexico' ain't the only reason to pop into ol' Guanajuato (unless you totally geek-out on Director Robert Rodriguez of course). Like a lot of Norte Americanos, I came here not for geeking-out but to study Spanish and found amor along the way (I highly recommend Instituto Falcon). A lively night life, fun co-eds and a once a year, week long festival of drama, music and dance that rivals Brazil's carnival make Guanajuato one of my top ten Mexican favs. Just beware of la llorona!

Santo Cafe. Delicious pasta, cold beer, and a chance to get out of the sun. Hooray!
