Guardalavaca, on the north shore of Cuba, is essentially a small town attached to a large tourist resort. If you want to get out of the resort, the surrounding countryside of hills and sugar cane fields is perfect to explore ... read more
on foot or by bike. The town’s name means “guard the cow” in Spanish, and the area used to be plagued by pirates, so it’s thought the name could derive from farmers’ warning cries when they spotted pirates out to steal their cattle. Alternatively, the original name may actually have been Guardalabarca, which means “guard the ship,” and again refers to the frequent pirate raids.
