Totally overrun with domestic tourists, the shops are pretty cookie cutter, and the food is overpriced. STILL, it's worth visiting for: a) A car-free island in China! b). Cool museums with great pianos c). Decent beaches. d). The character that still just barely exists under the surface, especially on side streets.

If you have ever wondered what a Chinese beach town would look like then Gulangyu is the place for you. The island was named 'drum waves' because of the sounds the rolling water make against the reefs and rocks. This car-free island is covered in gorgeous Victorian style houses because of various countries occupancy of the island over the years. Gulangyu is an island that will surprise and amaze you.
