Ha Long Bay is gorgeous thanks to the calm emerald waters and stunning cave and grottoes. Despite the regimented tourist schedule, seeing the jade waters and grottoes remain a sight to see.

The dramatic karst formations of northern Vietnam's Ha Long Bay, lost in the mists, may be one of the best sights in travel. Timeless, gorgeous, and faintly dreamlike, they exert a spell on you, a bit, even after you've left. You can explore the islands of the Bay by kayak (a standard tour outing), tour a GIGANTIC limestone cave (another one), and visit Cat Ba Island, with its fishermen in floating villages -- another amazing sight. Tours are easiest and cheapest to arrange in Hanoi -- standard packages of 1-3 days (sleeping on a junk on the Bay at night, or in Cat Ba Town: very cool) though they can seem at times like a bit of a tourist treadmill. A decent agency I recently used in Hanoi is Vega Travels.Recommended for:Outdoor Enthusiasts

Overnight cruise in the bay was great; it gave me a chance to swim in the bay. The water felt great. The vista here is great; especially during the sunset time. One or two days cruise would be good here.

Located in Quang Ninh Province, Ha Long Bay includes the sea areas of Ha Long City, Cam Pha Town and a part of Van Don island district. With the admirable natural beauty and multiform, special values, Ha Long has become the must-see destination in Viet Nam for domestic and international visitors.
The legend has it that, once upon a time, soon after the Viet people established their country, invaders came. The Jade Emperor sent Mother Dragon and her Child Dragons down to the earth to help the Viet people fight against their enemy. When the dragons landed down on the earth, invaders' boats were rushing to the shore.
The dragons immediately turned into thousands of stone islands emerging in the sea like great walls challenging the invaders' boats. The fast boats couldn't manage to stop and crashed into the islands and broke into pieces. After the victory, Mother Dragon and Child Dragons didn't return the heaven but stayed on the earth at the place where the battle had occurred. The location Mother Dragon landed is present Ha Long Bay and Child Dragons landed is present Bai Tu Long Bay. The dragons' tails waving the water created Bach Long Vi (present Tra Co Peninsula).
Ha Long Bay covers the area of 1,553km² and encompasses 1,969 islands of various sizes which are mainly limestone islands with tectonic age from 250 million to 280 million years. The process of long geological evolution created the unique Ha Long Bay in the world with thousands of islands which look like fantastic sculptural and artistic works of various graceful shapes such as Canh Buom (Sail) Islet, Trong Mai (Cock and Hen) Islet, Lu Huong (Incense Burner) Islet… All of them are vivid and soulful. Ha Long – a wonder of the creator

Beautiful & unusual with so much to look at. We bought our lunch from the hill tribes (fresh fish! ) and the crew on our boat cooked some delicious local dishes with it! I wish we could have stayed overnight and seen the sun rise the next morning. Id recommend bringing lots of sunscreen, a fan and a big wide brim hat.....the sun was crazy hot...it was July after all!!

such an extraordinary place...no wonder its one of the famous wonders of the world. I recommend staying there for at least one night as the trip out there from Hanoi is about 4 hours. You'll feel like you're trapped in sea of rocks...oh you are! haha But, seriously its breathtaking!!

Amazing limestone pinnacles jutting out of the bay. It is defintely worth hoping on a boat, and floating between them. Also go check out one of the floating fisheries, and have them show you some of the huge fish they keep.

Spent 2 days here just a few hours ago. We got to ride in the dragon cruise ships and spent the night on the boat, good food, meeting interesting people along the way, and getting humbled by such beautiful works of nature, halong bay is quite a site to see! Lots to do on the trip too, kayaking, visiting caves and of course taking in all the grand vistas the bay has to offer. :)
