When guests are welcomed Hacienda Zuleta, they are truly welcomed into an extraordinary home. Galo Plaza Lasso, a former president of Ecuador who had major influences on American politics, purchased the Hacienda in 1898. Incredible pictures and foreign gifts are proudly showcased throughout the home. Fernando, who is the grandson of Lasso and one of the most interesting men I have met, now runs the Hacienda.
The Hacienda is a working farm including 425 cows that contribute to the impressive cheese factory. Award winning cheeses are produced daily, spread throughout the Hacienda for guests to sample and also distributed internationally. Next to the factory there is an organic farm, which is used by the kitchen to prepare meals for guests. This garden will also offer cooking classes one-day soon.
The Hacienda has 16 guest rooms, each uniquely decorated with special family memorabilia. During the day guests can explore the Hacienda grounds with Amable, a superb guide who is proud to share the heritage and stories of Zuleta. He can explain the cheese making process then ride horses to the condor rehabilitation project, which is dedicated to saving these magnificent, endangered creatures. Bikes can be taken to waterfalls or around the community of Zuleta, located just outside the gates. There are also several embroidery shops, which sell true pieces of art to share back home.
In the evening, daily wine and cheese is served in one of the several cozy gathering rooms featuring fireplaces, historical photos and roses. Guests enjoy authentic Ecuadorian meals together, which contributes to the sense of community. This truly embraces the essence of Hacienda Zuleta: it is a magical place to immerse in the community and indulge in a truly authentic experience. I hope you are fortunate enough to be welcomed by Fernando and his family one-day soon.Recommended for

Absolutely magical. It used to be the house of the President of Ecuador. Half of the lands were donated during the land distribution era in the 60s. The family still runs the hotel, decorated with photos of Nixon and Johnson and others. Food is fantastic and there is beautiful horseback riding. It feels like the end of the earth. And it's worth every minute.
