While this neighborhood has evolved quite a bit over the years, it still retains its 60s era charm, with colorful independent bookstores/music shops and cafes and the smell of pot drifting through the street. It's a short walk from Golden Gate Park, another must-see spot for a visit to SF.

I both like and dislike the Haight District. I like Lower Haight, the area closer to downtown with amazing bars like Toronado and food options like Rosamunde. Upper Haight, on the other hand, is where I’m less of a fan. While the food, drink and shopping options are amazing, the area is a bit uncomfortable to walk through with all the burnt out faux-hippie kids lounging about, panhandling with aggression. For visitors of the city, it’s a must-see, as so much of San Francisco’s past was centered here.

Description

Nostalgic for 60s hippie culture? Head to the Haight - specifically, Haight-Ashbury - where Eastern-influenced shops and psychedelic murals decorate the neighborhood. Just don't expect it to be all peace and love - bigger chains have started moving in, and young panhandlers have begun to proliferate the area. More upscale restaurants and shops can be found near the Upper Haight, and Buena Vista ... read more
Park provides a calm respite from the grittiness of Lower Haight.
