    LABOR DAY 2014 UPDATE

After a nice walk at Montara State Beach, Gayle and I continued down the coast and stopped for a meal at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company. It was on the early side of the Lunch hour, and both the outdoor deck and Barbara's Fish Trap across the street were already busy on this gorgeous Labor Day Sunday. Since this place is dog friendly (we had the Pups), and the patio is so inviting, our choice was obvious.

It was wonderful sitting outside and watching the world go by. I skipped my usual burger choice and went for the seafood fajita dish, while Gayle opted for fish tacos. Both were delicious and went well with our micro-brews. Our dogs (Yogi and Stella) had a nice relaxing time as well (and with plenty of water provided by our hosts).

A few Saturdays ago, Gayle was taking care a friend's dog while they were out of town. Blackie is a sweet and gentle dog that was just what Gayle needed to ease back into pet care after her beloved Tyrone died of old age. We also enjoyed this dog's company so much that we joked that we would name her "Ebony" and start taking care of this fine canine ourselves.

We were also in the mood for a road trip and decided to cruise down the San Mateo Coast on this warm and sunny day. Around lunch time, we ended up at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company. We were attracted to the outdoor patio and the obvious dog friendly vibe. We'll leave Barbara's Fish Trap (across the street) for another adventure. We also noticed that since our last trip down this way (a few years ago), this area has seen some additional development and almost to the point of Fisherman's Wharf schlock. For example, I'm always Suspicious when a new retail area calls themselves the "Shoppes at..." Two Ps? Please.

We both enjoyed our food and the beer. Gayle also ordered a very good Bloody Mary, while Ebony sat at our feet calmly hanging out. The service was reasonably timely and our waiter was very friendly and helpful. Afterwards, we walked on the beach together, full and happy.

Great place to eat outside in the outdoor patio if the weather is good. The food is good with some good selection of their local beer. This are is pretty nice and really pretty to walk around in a nice and sunny summer day.

The food is simple and good, and the outdoor patio area with a view of the bay is very dog-friendly and inviting. My only complaint is about the shortage of shade umbrellas, because without one, the direct summer sun can scorch.

Great place for a burger and beer after a day of playing on or in the ocean. They've got a big outdoor patio (dogs OK) and a huge interior space. You get decent views of the harbor. Over the years the quality of the food has gone up and down and back up. The beer is good (try the taster's flight) and it's got a great location. During baseball season it's a fun place to watch Giant's games with an enthusiastic group. Flat-screen TVs are in the bar. They also feature live music all-year 'round with no cover charge.

You know those places that make you want to road trip just for lunch? This is one of those spots. Let's start with the outdoor fire pit (and the heat lamps, perfect for sitting outside on a cold day ... which is 90% of the time), then we'll talk about their homemade brews, food (perfectly acceptable brewpub grub, if a bit overpriced, but really -- are you here for the food?), diabetes-inducingly good desserts (I prefer the key lime pie but I've seen folks devour their chocolate goodies with glee), and finish with the view of the Pacific Ocean. They produce Mavericks beer and a half-dozen brews, from pale ale to stout. (Hint: Get their beer sampler to try all of them.)

The Half Moon Bay Brewery is your official 2012 Alection headquarters. You can choose between a Romney Ale and an Obama Ale. I sampled their Whittewater Witbier and Hefeweizen and both was pretty good. The Dijon Chicken Sandwich was pretty good.

The place has a very nice outdoor patio setting overlooking the ocean with plenty of fire it's to keep you warm while you enjoy their beers.

One of my favorite seaside breweries. OK, I don't know if that's really a genre, so it's one of my favorite breweries that also happens to be facing the sea - with a spectacular view! Enjoy the view around warm and toasty fire pits, with great food and the Company's house beers. My favorite house brew - Mavericks, of course - named for the local big wave surfing spot located just around the point from here.

Amazing sea food. We ordered the crispy seafood sampler platter which is really big and yummy, and the ceviche which was AMAZING. They gave us a new experimental fish taco dish on the house which really good and fresh. Service was great and the view is incredible. I really recommend this place, and it's only 30 mins from Stanford / 40 from SF

Been here three or 4 times. Like the food but it's not exceptional. A bit overpriced but hey, they are charging you for the view. Did not try the beers so cannot comment

Fun to sit outside by the fire pits! Located next to Pillar Point Harbor, not downtown HMB.
