Old-school Hawaii by the sea. Out past Hanalei town, on the way to Na Pali Coast State Park, this low-slung condo-style hotel hasn't changed much since the 1980s. No phones, TVs or in-room internet are all part of the "just chill" mantra of this place, where you can get a massage right by the beach. If you get discount rates, it's worth it, but don't pay full-price for this relatively isolated resort that doesn't have too many amenities.Recommended for:

This is beach front, Not a great swimming beach, but great location for the $.
Its an older hotel and doesn't have room service or a swim up bar, but old school charm. Kitchen is great if you have families and aren't interested in paying $15 for your 4 yr old to go thru the buffet at the hotel for cheerios, like I am. Tunnels and the best beach on kauai are only minutes away by car. It has everything you need for a week and supports families really well. Very quiet and secluded.Recommended for:

We stayed at Hanalei Colony for 3 nights at the end of our honeymoon. Great for a quiet, less-expensive trip. It's almost at the end of the road after the town of Hanalei, after almost all of the 1-way bridges. These are condos and perfect for a family of 4 or 2 couples who don't care about having too much privacy. Make sure to upgrade to a condo on the beach, it's not that much more.
There are kitchens in the unit and BBQs (both coal and gas) on-site. Make sure to stock up on booze and food since the grocery store is about 15 minutes away and the bar onsite closes at 10pm some nights.
It's also very close to Tunnels (not exactly walking distance like they will tell you) and the best hiking trails on the island.Recommended for:
