I stayed in a hotel on the rocky beach in Hanga Roa, the only settlement of size on the island. Everything was in walking distance, including several moai. If you have a motorcycle endorsement on your license, you can rent a scooter to get to the farther away places.

The only town on Easter Island with developed infrastructure like paved roads and drainage, Hanga Roa is very charming and very walkable. There are numerous restaurants, cafes, tiendas, tour operators, and grocery shops. Guest houses dot the main area and although there are more luxurious hotel offerings on other parts of the island, a guesthouse or b&b right within Hanga Roa is where you want to be to really get to know the "town life" of the island.
