Upon confirmation that I was going to have dinner here with a few of my former roommates, I jumped on the trusty Yelp site and scoped the joint out. Not sure why I had a bit of a debate between settling for the chicken with 2 sides or the chicken and waffle. Uh, hello! It's been years since I had the chicken and waffle combo. I for one find it hard to resist a good waffle simply on its own. That decision was a lot easier to make than I had initially thought. One of my roommates got the same and had hoped to get sides with it as well. Good thing she didn't. 3 pieces of fried chicken, the waffle and 2 corn muffins per person preceding our main courses was plenty. Portions are pretty big here, which meant we would all be taking leftovers home with us. I just finished mine a while ago. Mmmhmm, good stuff. That kind of satisfaction deserves a future visit.

In these hard, albeit improving, economic times, it's no wonder that I turn to simple and satisfying comfort food. There's something familiar about rich, simple, back to the basics American food that satisfies the spirit as well as my stomach. Hard Knox does this job well.
What to order here:
Chicken and Waffles (10)
Beef Short Ribs w/ 2 sides (14)
The beef short ribs here are saucy and fall off the bone. The fried chicken is well marinated, the meat tender and juicy, the skin perfectly crispy. Many hail the chicken and waffles as the best in San Francisco. I like it a lot here. Although I'm not sure if it's better than what I had at the Breakfast Klub in Houston, it definitely comes close.
Not bad for a city that is known for organic, vegan, gluten-free frou frou.

This little hole in the wall joint in the Dogpatch neighborhood has some nice southern soul food. The fried chicken & waffles is pretty good, but I really like their chicly fried steak. The have locally (Potrero Hill) brewed Anchor Steam on tap. They're collard greens are a bit overdone, but the burger is a good order to go with. You can sit at a booth or the bar.

Whoo! The sides here hold up on their own! Sweet yams, collard greens, creamed corn. And don't get me started on their spicy fried chicken. It blew my mind and I only wish I could find chicken like that in LA!
