Thinking of escaping to Greece with some friends next summer. Mykonos and Santorini are on the short list but I fear the crowds in both. How overrun are these islands with tourists in early June? How essential is it to have your own oasis (e.g., villa or nice hotel) if you want to find a slice of tranquility?

One of the best hotel stays I have ever had. This hotel actually caters to upscale Greeks and the service reflects that. My family of 20 is still talking about how wonderful it was. Gorgeous!

I love both of these islands so much!! Both islands are LGBT friendly so they are great choices. Travel to either of them is really good until about the 3rd week of June then they start to get overrun by tourists, so maybe avoid after that. In Mykonos if you want a quiet but sophisticated atmosphere Ornos is perfection! You actually get a feel for Greece in this exquisite little town, full of upscale Greek designers, traditional tavernas, modern bars and restaurants. There are only about 40 cars on the entire island so there are upscale motor coaches that transfer tourists to Mykonos Town virtually round the clock. It sounds a bit hokey but I promise it's easy and everybody does it. :) The town of Agios Ioannis is next to Ornos and is filled with beautiful hotels, as well. A great spot if you don't want to deal with the crowds. :) Also fairly new, the service is good and it's still off the radar.
