Beautiful beaches all around this island and top tourist destination of all the Hawaiian island. Beaches are filled with people even during low season, for good reason. There is so much to eat, see and do here. A perfect honeymoon destination or just a great vacation getaway with family and friends.

Sorry, I think Lahaina is overrated. Pricey restaurants, art galleries, and crowds. If you want to see something special, go to the nearby Buddhist temple complex, cemetery, and "baby beach" (gentle waves on a lovely beach behind the cemetery). If you stay off the main streets, the eateries and shops are more interesting.

Kihei is where I live. It's a beach town, full of condos, but a lot of neighborhoods too. The Piilani highway and Kihei road run all the way to Wailea. There are mostly small shopping centers around Kihei. For other purchases we go to town (Kahului). Weekends we head for the beaches too. Sunday sunset my family is at Kam3. ...

Home of the famous Hawaiian Kona coffee, this western area of the big island is a must see. You can also see evidence of inland Tsunamis as most of the roads are built 50-60 feet above sea level. Fun Fact- Jurassic Park was filmed here.

The downtown area is quaint and right out of the 60s / 70s. Home to a number of mom and pop businesses, including coffee shops and restaurants. Parking is easy and the area is easily navigated on foot.

Koloa is one of those "Wait, did we just drive past it?" island towns. The main street is just a few blocks long, crammed with shops, art galleries, places to eat, snack shops and a couple of historical artifacts from the sugar-plantation days. Fuel your stomach here, buy a few souvenirs and then head on down the road to Poipu ...

Voted one of the best beaches in the world. The hotels along Wailea are more expensive but if you are looking for a relaxing vacation then you need to stay here. Smaller town than Kaanapali, not the sort of place you would go to party.

One of my favorite beach towns in Hawaii! Aim to get off the beaten path ( think beaches in neighborhoods ) vs parking at the over crowded beach park. A good hike is the Lanikai pill boxes .

You get to see the cauldron most days, though weather can make it less visible. The visitor center has a snack shop and gift shop. If lava is flowing its probably best seen from a helicopter. The days are gone when you could drive up and walk on the crusted lava toward the latest flow.

Hana is a bit of a drive from the rest of the island, but it is well worth the effort to get there. The drive makes the journey amazing, if you ask me, but some people get car sick.

North shore has some of the most scenic views. It's far more quiet then south Waikiki where are the tourist are. It's about an hour or two hour in traffic drive up here from Waikiki.

You'll pass through this town more times than you can count during your trip to Kauai, but there's more to it than meets the eye looking through the windshield of your car. Spend an hour or two learning about the island's fiercely independent history in the locally staffed museum, then grab a counter stool at Haimura Saimin. Drive down to ...

Kahului is the city where you will likely fly in and out of the airport. There are some nice amenities here, like Costco and Whole Foods, but the truth is, you will most likely leave here as quickly as you can to head to the resorts. This is not the destination in Maui, but it is a great resource if ...

On the east side of Kauai and the so-called "Coconut Coast," Kapaa is a busy place. Locals come to do business, hang out and go shopping, while tourists eat, shop, drink and amble back and forth to the beach. A lot of vacation rentals and B&Bs are scattered around Kapaa, but if you want something more peaceful, look further north ...
