This marine preserve gives safe haven to migratory north Pacific humpback whales, who journey from their summer feeding grounds near Alaska to the warmer waters of Hawaii to give birth and nurse their young. The best time to view them is between December and April, although you might also spot whales from shore as early as mid-November or as late as mid-May. The marine sanctuary's visitor center in Kihei has educational exhibits and activities for kids, and binoculars and telescopes for whale-watching by land lubbers.
