There aren't many bed & breakfast style inns in San Francisco, but Hayes Valley Inn definitely stands out. The building is older, but feels like you're visiting your grandparent’s home. There’s a lot of floral décor and it feels like a country home – classic, and absolutely charming. Hayes Valley Inn is a European style bed & breakfast, so they do serve continental breakfast. Some rooms have bunk beds while others have standard queen. If you're traveling with family, this would be a great area to stay in. Hayes Valley has many small eateries, shops, and even a playground nearby. Do note that bathrooms are shared though, but each room has a sink and vanity. They also have 28 guestrooms, so if you're looking for a tiny private bed & breakfast run out of a home, this might not be your thing. They also have a common family room, and free Wi-Fi is available. They also bake cookies for guests in the afternoon – a cute touch.

Hayes Valley Inn is just like a quaint B&B your grandparents would love, especially if your grandparents happened to be urban tattooed young artists. Beyond the astonishingly good prices, the Inn is in the heart of creative Hayes Valley, home to funky boutiques, trendy restaurants, and a sake shop, and walking distance to the symphony, opera house, and City Hall. And, at these prices, you won't mind sharing a bathroom with other hotel guests or paying to park in a lot nearby.

Hayes Valley Inn is what one might expect from a “boutique hotel.” Situated in Hayes Valley, the hotel is really close to amazing restaurants, three of which are next door (Dobb’s Ferry), at the corner (Chez Maman) and across the street (Absinthe). Then there are all the artsy shops and eateries down Hayes Street to the west. Take the 21 Hayes bus towards town and you’ll pass City Hall and head straight into all the shopping and dining of the Union Square and Financial District hoods.

Rooms are very pretty, decorated with vintage linens and furnishings. There are a lot of flowers here. It’s like stepping into grandma’s vintage home; It’s very comforting. A beautiful dining room provides an “extended continental breakfast” of pastries and cereals. Bathrooms are shared and there are no elevators, so take note of those facts if they are important to you.

The gentleman on staff, Dennis Hale, was really friendly and fun. He was great to chat with about the history of the hotel and the nearby hot spots. Definitely say hello to him if you happen to see him working.

For those simply looking for an affordable 'room' in Silicon Valley/SF Bay Area: There may be 'bed-and-breakfasts' to try in heartland of Silicon Valley, of which I'm not aware. Otherwise, there's a super cheap, perfectly adequate place right in the heart of Hayes Valley -- my favorite area of SF. It's called Hayes Valley Inn (also a bed-and-breakfast; so your morning meal included). Hayes Valley being like SF's answer to NY's West Village, however much on a smaller scale. I'm pretty sure I reviewed this up-and-coming area (at least when I lived there; now perhaps up-and-came area of SF). Also, Inn itself has gotten great reviews if you Google on 'regular Web'-- one guy saying he had researched for hours and then enjoyed enough to give it 4-stars. Hope helpful! ;)
