Great breakfast or brunch spot. Casual atmosphere. Nicely-prepared meals and flavorful, rich brewed coffee.

There was plenty of room when we arrived at Helser's, and I was initially a bit disappointed when my son insisted that we sit at the bar. That turned out to be OK, as the counter service was fast and friendly, and there were good views forward into the Kitchen and behind us into the Dining Room. Helser's is also Kid Friendly, but watch out for those Mama Grizzlies!

I'm a big fan of Corned Beef Hash (and variations) and was very pleased with my order of Pepper Bacon and Cheddar Hash. The poached eggs were prepared perfectly, and the whole montage was really too much to eat, but a joy getting it done. There was actually plenty to share, but my son was just as content with his OJ.

Helser's is also one of those places that is distinguished by the regret of what you didn't order. For me that would include the buttermilk pancakes (based on Grandma's recipe), the Brioche French Toast, and most of all, the German Pancake (which might be big enough the feed the whole family). I'd love to come back, and probably the only thing holding me back is my desire to breakfast my way through the rest of Portland first.

The mushroom hash is so ridiculously good here. I went there two mornings in a row when I was there for a weekend. There wasn't much of a wait either. I highly recommend this place.

The Crimini Hash is to die for. Go on a weekday to avoid the wait, or order for pick up.
