The Hilton South Wharf is a feast for the eyes: pops of color, art installations around every corner (and a Mercedes Benz in the lobby when I was there). I'll admit the receptionist I happened to interact with a little brusque, but the hotel was pretty busy so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she was just having an off day. I absolutely loved the décor of this hotel, from the rich colors and wood paneling in the entrance to the trendy dining room and elegant guest suites. It’s the perfect place to stay if you’re attending a conference at the Convention Centre next door. My advice: skip dinner at the hotel restaurant (even though the it does look nice) and instead try one of the places on the water right behind the hotel. I’m partial to the vibe at The Bridge café and bar—perfect for a glass of wine as the sunsets.Recommended for:

If you’re in town for a convention, you can’t beat the Hilton at the Convention Centre, which is a grand total of ten metres’ walking distance from the centre and, while a decent walk from the city centre, the hotel’s location on Melbourne’s South Bank is a great spot for jogging, meandering from bar to bistro and for visiting the Crown Casino.
Until now, I’ve never been in a hotel lobby with this much artwork without finding it tacky. It’s full of hypercoloured zebras, purple and gold pastels, steel wool sculptures and a Mercedes, but somehow it works - I was enchanted. The hotel rooms are what one would expect from the Hilton, the suites with living rooms are particularly impressive, especially if you are lucky enough to get a room with a view of the river. The room service menu doesn’t have much variety and is very overpriced ($31 for a burger?) and there’s no pool, but as long as you’re happy with a 15 minute walk to the city centre, there’s little to find fault with at the Hilton South Wharf.
