I was pleasantly surprised by the Hippodrome Hotel.
It was down a small, unappealing street near Montmartre and the red-light district, in an unremarkable building without an elevator. But when I saw more of the hotel, the rooms in particular, I couldn't help but notice that, for a place this cheap, it was very clean, with a few surprising and elegant decorative touches (antique desks etc...) and that the feel was unpretentiously rustic and comfortable.

This small budget hotel is located just before Place de Clichy on a quiet street with underground parking only 10m away.
It has a large room that serves as a lobby, dining area and T.V. room. Upstairs you will find the rooms, which are surprisingly pleasant and that are decorated in a classic French style with red and gold accents and furnished with antique desks and bedside tables. The bathrooms are small but clean. For a 2 star hotel they are nicer than others I’ve seen, plus they all have Wifi.
The owner seems very sweet and helpful and rooms are very well priced (usually under 100 Euros/night). Great restaurants, bakeries, food markets, bars and nightclubs are close by and with Place de Clichy metro station you have easy access to the center of Paris. Make sure to take a walk through Montmartre, my favorite part of Paris!

The Hippodrome Hotel is located on the bottom of Montmartre, just off the lively (and also a bit sketchy) Place de Clichy. It's a great location for exploring the bustling nightlife of Pigalle, and walking distance from the big shopping area in Opéra, with the legendary department stores of Galeries Lafayette and Printemps.
The hotel itself is basic two-star hotel. The lobby is not that impressive, but the rooms are decorated with some antique pieces that give a little character. The hotel is not the worst one of these two-star budget hotels in Paris, and I think it's suitable for price conscious travellers who rather spend their money eating out or shopping rather than paying premium for a hotel.
