Great location! Convenient area with coffee shops, stores, drugstore and restaurants. Access to cable car line or a short walk to the Powell line.
Staff were very helpful, friendly and approachable. The room was confortable, cozy and clean. High floor rooms have a beautiful view of SF.
Just parking was way too expensive, that's my only complain.

When I was a kid, I didn't like this hotel. It was a symbol of how dark and gritty Van Ness seemed to me. This was 20 years ago.
Today, the hotel is new and Van Ness is bustling with activity (if it was like this before, I really can't recall). The Holiday Inn Golden Gate sits conveniently near the 49 and 47 lines which take travelers to the following: Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Caltrain, AT&T Park, the Mission, Civic Center and more. Additionally, the hotel sits just a block away from Polk Street, where several of my favorite bars in the city sit.
The staff are really friendly. Several of them have worked here for over two decades. If you really want to know about San Francisco, talk to these folks.
Finally, the bed is wonderful. They include two types of pillows, labeled by firmness. Combined with the great views, it's wholly comforting.

We stayed in the holiday inn San Francisco, after a big mix up with our vouchers with best flights that organized our booking, and arriving in San Fran , only to find out that we were not booked in on that date, and left sitting in the foyer for many hours until afternoon shift came on , and after they got sick of us sitting on foyer waiting for Perth just flights to open up due to time difference, we were taken in to a room and told to fix problem up the next day, the hotel did turn out to be a very nice hotel too stay in even though I do give them four stars I feel on arrival the way we were treated was not even worth one star.

Get a bottle of champagne, a blanket, some lovely hors d'ouvres. Take the elevator to the top floor. Head left. Get to the end of the hallway to the emergency exit. Open the door. Go up up up. Get to the roof. Once on the roof you will see a big square box (elevator shaft) with a ladder. Head up that ladder. Lay the blanket down, light a candle, and enjoy the view of the entire Bay Area. Tell the one you're with you love them. Rejoice.

A Holiday Inn is a no-nonsense hotel, no surprises but this is a pretty awesome place for any SF visitor. It's right on the Van Ness/California intersection which means that you can hop on a cable car right outside the hotel or take a bus down toward City Hall. The views of the city skyline are amazing and the wi-fi is free. On top of all that, if you need to a rent a car, a City-Rent-a-Car can be booked from the hotel gift shop and they've got awesome car rental rates. Moreover you can park that car at your hotel making it really handy. Getting around SF couldn't be any easier from this starting point.
Features: Holiday Inn Golden Gateway includes 499 rooms across 26 floors. An observation area at the top floor offers views of the entire city. A restaurant and sports bar are located on premises. Guestrooms: Each of the rooms includes a coffeemaker, Bath & Body Works toiletries, an ironing board and complimentary wireless Internet. Flat-screen televisions include video games. Beds include pillows of various firmness, clearly labeled. Pet-friendly rooms are available as well.
