We didn't get to go all the way up to the sign itself (apparently, it's tough to do?) but it was visible from a bunch of different spots. The best was probably from the Griffith Observatory.

Climb up one of the hills surrounding the sign and you'll have the best view :)

I mean who doesn't go to LA and try to get some sort of picture of the Hollywood sign? Or make sure you take a road that will let you catch a glimpse of it.

Sure you can't get really close to it, and that's a bummer, but I understand that they're trying to upkeep it and keep the integrity of it, so be it. There are tons if locations to see this sign, but the best one is the unmarked one. It's up Canyon through the neighborhood and right above the reservoir. There's a park there on both sides of the road and the road widens from the twisty narrow neighborhood roads, to one wide enough to park on both sides. This is pretty much the closest you can to it by car and be able to get out and snap a photo. I highly suggest checking this rout out. There will be no signs though, as its kind of a "locals only" type of deal.

Nothing fancy, it's actually a lot smaller, and kinda hard to see from most places, but still worth a quick drive to snap a photo.

So I have done a quick look at all of the Hollywood Sign hiking trails and it looks like most of you did the Hollyridge Trail... Consequently I think you just like the odor of the horsies... However I made the trek a different way, which was longer, only partially on the super wide paved service roads and sometimes charging through the scrub brush at breakneck speed clambering over rocks and through moss covered flora and fauna.

Essentially my buddy Neil and I went up the Griffith Observatory hike to the overlook, then set off across ridgelines to get to the sign. It's not like it's an easy site to miss. We ended up with a 5+ mile hike in total up and down several times as we wound around several peaks on a couple of ridges on the way there.

Pro Tip: Bring more than a single bottle of water if you decide to hike via the ridgeline... The other routes maybe a single bottle or two is fine, but the ridgeline is a lot further in the hot sun and needs some extra to drink so you don't get too dehydrated or get heatstroke.

Part of the trail is somewhat dusty (primarily the Griffith Overlook portion of the hike). Once you get about a 14 mile past that area on a fireroad, the dust disappears. There are several trails that wind their way on both sides of the peaks going down the ridgeline over to the Hwood Sign. Some are more used than others and its easy to see, but being able to cut on both sides of the peaks provides for a lot of new views and different looks making sure things get changed up a little bit. Both ways also provide the ability to do some limited bouldering if you so choose.

We also saw a lot of spor and sign of wild animals, primarily deer, but didn't see anything other than birds. We did however enjoy looking down at all the people on the paved roads winding their way around like ants =)

Overall it was a very fun hike without too many others. The route we took only had about 10 other people the entire time we were hiking. Whereas every other group down below on the fire/service roads were that big. The ridgeline also let out at the service road as it wound up behind the Hollywood sign and allowed us a great view from the promontory above it of all of the LA Basin and the SF Valley. I would enjoy doing this hike again and would likely take the same route, as I am never one for the simple and boring regular hikes. See you on the trails my friends...

It is a landmark. It is also highly overrated. There is no easy way to get a well angled picture of the sign. I don't understand why people would go through all the troubles anyway. LA has so much more to often than a silly sign.

If you must get a picture for some unknown reasons, Griffith Park Observatory is a good spot. While you are there, make sure you spend some time in the observatory. It is stunning.

I did the Hollywood Hike to see the sign. Super easy hike, you'll see mothers pushing strollers up because they have blacktop concrete up the majority of the hike. Parking can be tricky so plan in advance here: http://www.parkme.com/hollywood-parking/

It's amazing how much fun you can have at a sign. My friend and I had the greatest time taking photos & coming up with clever ways to capture it. Also there is a charming park right near it!

Here are some good places from which to view and photograph the sign:

    1. The fourth level of the Hollywood & Highland Center;

    2. Beachwood Drive off Franklin Avenue. A drive up Beachwood will provide a number of photo opportunities. If you travel to the end of Beachwood there is a parking area and the starting point for hiking trails that lead closer to the sign, which itself has rather heavy security; and

    3. Off Barham Boulevard from the 101 Freeway travel toward 3202 Canyon Lake Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068. In addition, a short distance past an attractive dog park there is a nice viewing area of a segment of the Los Angeles Basin and a number of close-up views of the sign. If you continue on Canyon Lake Drive you will eventually reach Beachwood Drive.

Great hike up to the sign but just know you cannot get very close and the hike is not short. Great to see though.

    The famous Hollywood sign!

You can hike up to it, and it's a nice little hike. Not too arduous, and it's fun to go with friends. Unfortunately, you can't go right up to the sign because they gate it off, but it's still nice to be in its vicinity. Celebrities often come on this hike too!

Picture took while a light hike at Mount Lee. We drove as further as possible to get closer to the sign. Then, a no rush walk full of great photos from LA landscape.

The iconic Hollywood Sign is so larger than life, so in your face telling you you're HERE, no, I AM here! Annoucing its presence, that is so Hollywood, I would imagine. Really is there any other landmarks that spell out everything for you like this?! So much fun.

The picturesque Hollywood sign is an iconic sight in California. A tourist bus tour and/or a hike are ideal ways to explore. The most popular trails are the Charlie Turner from Griffith Observatory and the Hollyridge in the Beachwood Canyon, which leads to Griffith Park and into a variety of routes that allows visitors to overlook the city and the Hollywood sign.

Description

The Hollywood sign is an iconic landmark in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park. Built in 1923 by a housing developer, the sign originally read “Hollywoodland” and served as an advertisement for a new development in the Hollywood Hills. It was meant to be a short-term installation, but quickly gained international recognition as the film industry took off. The sign’s uneven layout and stark white lettering have spawned imitations the world over, from Serbia to New Zealand to Indonesia. The city of Los Angeles proved its dedication to the sign in 2010 when a successful city-wide campaign was launched to save the sign and surrounding land from an ambitious developer.
