Also known as the Gateway to the Keys, Homestead makes for the perfect stop along the way in to or out of the Florida Keys. Quell your milkshake cravings, watch a man wrestle an alligator with his bare hands, do a little outlet shopping, and then kick back with a Corona and an ocean view all in one day. Homestead's population is still small enough that at times, you'll experience that small-town charm, but big enough that you'll immediately find a 24-hour drug store as well as several chain restaurants if you need them. If you pass through it on the highway, you'd never guess this city has so many hidden gems. National parks, an exotic animal sanctuary, and some of the best Mexican food this side of the border can all be found in this splendid suburb.

Not much to do in Homestead. But a good location from where you can go to Miami or the Everglades.

Description

Homestead is a small city near the southernmost tip of Florida, some 35 miles southwest of Miami. It’s most notable as a jumping-off point for the bewitching Everglades National Park. The Anhinga Trail on Pine Island is particularly accessible—a half-mile walk through a sawgrass marsh, where you can see alligators and turtles, amongst other things. For the more adventurous, camping and kayaking is also available in certain areas of the park, as well as boat tours. The third largest national park in the lower 48 states, the Everglades is an International Biosphere Reserve, host to delicately balanced and fragile ecosystems such as mangrove swamps and marl prairies. Among its endangered or protected species are the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee. Also near Homestead is the Biscayne National Park, which includes Biscayne Bay, one of the top scuba diving sites in the United States. Fishing, kayaking, sailing and camping are also popular. Homestead is the bizarre Coral Castle, built by the eccentric Edward Leedskalnin. It’s a surreal set of structures built from megalithic stones each weighing several tons, though they are actually a type of limestone rather than coral. Some people claim the castle was built using some unknown and esoteric form of science.
