If you're a fan of the hostel lifestyle, you'll probably like Hostal Pochon. It provides a ton of great services, including cooking lessons, tours and bike rentals, and the common areas are perfect for meeting your fellow hostellers. The price includes breakfast, and the hostel has a well-stocked kitchen guests can use. Rooms range from cheap six-bunk zoos to pricier private rooms with bathrooms, internet and cable TV. Not everything at Hostal Pochon is wine and roses, however. Smoke from a cigarette in the guest lounge, for example, tends to infiltrate most corners of the hostel, and the shared bathrooms could easily become crowded and uncomfortable. And while Pochon is hidden away on a quiet street, a concert at the auditorium just up the hill is likely to keep you awake if your fellow guests don't.

Hostal Pochon is outside of the main tourist area, but only a few blocks’ walk to Santo Domingo and other attractions. It’s at the bottom of the hill below the Guelaguetza auditorium, and guests can hear concerts clearly from the courtyard. At $10 per person per night, Hostal Pochon is a steal for travelers who don’t mind sharing a room with three to five other guests and two small bathrooms (one women’s and one men’s) with the rest of the hostel. Private rooms, including one with a private bathroom, range from about $24 to $32. Rooms are clean, but basic, furnished with bunk beds, lockers and a fan. Guests get WiFi access throughout the hostel, and also can use the well-equipped kitchen and a common area with a television, couches and a computer. The hostel also offers rental bikes, cooking lessons, excursions and a book and DVD exchange.

Oaxacan hospitality at its finest. Hostal Pochon sits on a quiet street just a few minutes walk from the Zocalo. The staff is extremely helpful and always eager to steer you in the right direction, answer any questions, and sell you beer. Rooms are simple, clean, and affordable but the shared bathrooms are small - so go for the room with the private bath.
