Located directly across from Mérida's colorful central square (zócalo), Hostal Zocalo definitely has a great location if you want to be close to the action. Although you wouldn't know it from the outside, this affordable hotel is mostly open to the elements on the inside, with large, open-air courtyards filled with potted plants. You'll pass through a kitchen that guests are welcome to use (and where a simple breakfast, included in the room price, is served), by tables and couches full of young travelers chatting and playing card games, and on to the brightly painted, comfy rooms. The cheaper rooms have shared bathrooms. The rooms in the back are quietest.
