Of course you should go to Lenin's tomb, just for cultural awareness and whatnot. When I went in 1974 the line wrapped all the way around the Kremlin. It's probably shorter now, but still expect a line. The waxy-looking figure in the tomb is pretty creepy.

While the Tretyakov Museum is known for its exclusive Russian artistic works, the Pushkin Arts Museum is dedicated to foreign art (much of the art was seized by the brutal communist government from private Russian citizens during the lawless days of the communists) of the Enlightenment period up to the Impressionists and post-Impressionists.

Saw this in 1994 as it was under construction. Never been back to the finished building, but I gather it's well worth a look from the external architecture alone.

Architecture, gorgeous. Contents, shopping mall. During Soviet times a market where people waited in famous queues for their goods, the now-glitzy shopping mall probably has Lenin rolling in his well-preserved grave, just across the square.

This is a quintessential tourist stop. This is just outside the walls of the Kremlin in what used to be the moat. It's a beautiful park area, and it's all set up for tourists from all over the world. Once again, I wouldn't go there at night, simply because you won't get good photos.

The House of Unions was constructed in the first half of the 18th century and later on, it was bought by Moscow nobles. It was here that the Liberator Tsar, Alexander II, gave a speech before the nobles informing them of Russia's need to abolish serfdom. And a few years later, Tsar Alexander II did just that by liberating the ...

This is actually a monument to the diabolical karl marx, whose hateful diatribes against a free society lead to lenin, stalin, mao, pol pot, castro brothers, chavez and other malcontents, and the mass murder of millions of innocent human beings all in the name of communist ideology. Some achievement, huh?

I've never seen an ugly or uninteresting piece of the Kremlin. Every inch of it has a majesty that should be documented. I don't know if there is a book about the structure itself, but there should be.

Beautiful and historic theater (in Russian Bolshoi literally just means big). Seeing the ballet here is an unforgettable experience. The Bolshoi recently reopened its main stage after being closed for renovations for several years, and it is one of the most ornate, romantic, beautiful theatres in the world.

Modern reconstruction of a cathedral formally demolished in Soviet times and reputedly financed by a cigarette tax. We visited while a service was on and I could have spent ages in there listening to the singing. Also good for cheap authentic icons.

It's hard to describe the grandeur that comes with all of the gilded onion towers that you see in Russia. It's hard to say that any one outshines the others. They all work together to create an atmosphere that you won't get anywhere else. That's why they are all so special.

Baths don't come any more opulent than this Moscow favourite patronised by the political and showbiz elite. In style terms, it's Gothic meets Romanesque meets Baroque meets Moorish. You may struggle a bit if you don't speak any Russian.
