Hostelito is a nice little hostel in the heart of downtown Cozumel, located just off the main plaza. It’s a repurposed apartment building that has been cut up into dorms and private rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The dorms are mixed sex with single-sex bathrooms. The biggest of them is a windowless room with bright lights and the constant whirl of fans; it has a long row of bunk beds with thick mattresses and tie-die curtains. The smaller dorm rooms and many private rooms have air-con, which is a relief especially in the hottest months of the year. The décor of most is somewhat bare with quirky set ups—a bed here, a bed there, a TV on a dressing table, a TV on top of a closet, random sheet sets and mismatched toilets and seats—but they’re clean and comfortable enough, especially for the price. The best parts of the place are the common areas—a leafy outdoor mezzanine with hammocks and chairs, a welcoming solarium, and a spotless outdoor kitchen for guest use. If I were still a backpacker, this would be heaven.

It’s amazing how long it took for there to be an honest-to-goodness hostel in Cozumel. Hostelito opened a few years ago, and remains the only dorms-n-breakfast place in town. I like it a lot, though it’s not the best hostel I’ve ever stayed in. The dorm bunks are comfy and solid, with good mattresses and linens. They’re pretty tightly packed, however, in a room with fluorescent lights and no windows. Bathrooms are clean and large lockers are provided. Hostelito has a handful of reasonably-priced private rooms which were being renovated when I passed by, including new floors and bathrooms. There are several nice hangout spots, too, including a sunny top-floor patio, and you’re just a few blocks from the center. The owner is young, cool and highly competent, and the staff are friendly and helpful. All in all, a good bet for budget travelers.
